County Down

The home of St Patrick is remarkable for its many low, beautifully cultivated hills. However, in south County Down, the rugged Mountains of Mourne, formed from stark granite, offer a striking contrast to this arable land. With a history spanning 7000 years, County Down has many important archaeological sites and ancient monuments, together with climbing and walking attractions for static caravan owners staying in one of the thirty local parks, or their own log cabin. At Murlogh, the sand dunes have sign-posted walkways for nature lovers to find out all about local plant- and wild-life, and the geology and history of these magnificent dunes.
St Patrick related heritage abounds – mobile home holidaymakers can walk along the same soil path as St Patrick, see where he addressed his first sermon, visit Struell where St Patrick blessed the wells and finally move on to Downpatrick where to encounter the church which St Patrick built. To capture the feel of Georgian life, Castle Ward is a breathtaking mansion is bursting with grand art work and antique furniture and ornaments. Castlewellan Forest Park is a beautiful park with a famous arboretum which was started in 1740, and has many lovely walking trails as well as riding paths. It has a large lake and overlooking it is a Scottish baronial style castle built in 1856.Static caravan owners interested in further important local heritage can visit the Bronte Homeland Interpretative Centre, which provides details of the life and times of the famous Bronte family. The school and church where Patrick Bronte, father of the novelist sisters Charlotte, Emily and Anne, taught and preached have been preserved. There is also the eight mile Bronte Homeland Drive.
Belfast, Northern Ireland's principal city, straddles the border between County Down and County Antrim. Belfast has become a boomtown lately, with trendy cafes, bars and restaurants springing up everywhere. Popular attractions include Queen's University, the Botanic Gardens, the Ulster Museum and the City Hall. The new Odyssey Stadium hosts everything from Ice Hockey to pop concerts. A walking tour of the city is a great addition to any itinerary.
Newcastle, Bangor, Donaghadee, and Warrenpoint are some of the fine resorts that line the Down coast, linked by good roads that closely follow the picturesque winding shoreline.
