For static caravan owners interested in history, Chepstow Castle is one of Wales’ most impressive, both for its stature and location. Built on cliffs overlooking the river Wye, it stands guard over what was one of the most important routes into Wales. The Wye and Usk Valleys are exceptionally beautiful and make for ideal walking holidays, for log cabin and mobile home holidaymakers that love to get out and about in the great outdoors.
The attractive Welsh border town of Monmouth has Roman and Medieval beginnings, the Romans having formed the settlement of Blestium at the joining of the Rivers Wye, Trothy and Monnow (where Monmouth now stands) in the 1st century AD. The town’s fortified Monnow Bridge (complete with portcullis) is the only surviving example of its kind in Britain. The actual town of Monmouth was founded shortly after the Norman invasion of 1066, and the Norman influence on the town is still very much in evidence to this day. Henry V was born at Monmouth Castle and is celebrated throughout the town. Henry’s greatest victory took place at Agincourt, when his 5700 men defeated a 25000 strong French army. This is where the ‘middle-fingered salute’ was born following the French threat to cut off the offending digit of the English bowmen. On a more contemporary note, rock band Queen are said to have composed their famous "Bohemian Rhapsody" in Monmouth.
