Tyne and Wear
This small county, home to a small handful of caravan parks, is named for the rivers Tyne and Wear, on whose estuaries it stands. Turner Prize winning sculptor Antony Gormley’s “Angel of the North” spreads its jumbo jet sized wings in welcome beside the A1 on the southern approach to Tyneside, symbolizing the buzzing new energy rejuvenating the heavy industrial heart of Geordieland.South Tyneside is Catherine Cookson Country. The author and the surroundings she wrote about are celebrated in the Cookson Gallery at the South Shields Museum and Art Gallery. Nearby the clean sandy beaches of Roker or further north, Tynemouth and Whitely Bay, provide the perfect environment for relaxing static caravan owners to curl up with one of Cookson’s much-loved Tyneside characters.
Newcastle City, once in the forefront of 19th century industrial innovation, is now the forefront of technical innovation, leisure and culture. Mobile home holidaymakers can wander down the transformed Quayside waterfront, now lined with stylish hotels, designer bars, restaurants and public art. The Gateshead Millennium Bridge, a work of art in itself, arches across the Tyne to link the City to Gateshead Quays and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art. The Baltic Centre is a new a site for the production, presentation and experience of contemporary art. At the International Centre for Life, which promotes international research into genetics, LIFE! Interactive World uses motion simulators, computer games and live performances as a fun way for mobile home holidaymakers and their families to find out what LIFE! is all about. Static caravan tourists that love to shop can while away the hours at the Metro Centre shopping and leisure mall, one of the biggest of its kind in Europe.
