Isle of Man

Although the picturesque Isle of Man lies just off the north west coast of England in the Irish Sea, it is not actually part of the United Kingdom, but legally, a dependency of the British crown. Surrounded by Scotland to the north, to the east by England, by Wales to the south and to the west by Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man has its own parliament in the Tynwald, a Scandinavian term meaning “meeting field” (it was a Norwegian territory until 1266 when it was ceded to Scotland and came under British administration in 1765). The Tynwald is the oldest parliament in the world with over 1000 years of history and passes laws subject to royal consent. The Isle of Man produces its own coins and notes in UK currency denominations.
The island is easily accessible with ferries and flights and has fifteen or so caravan parks from which mobile home holidaymakers can explore this fascinating little area, or you may decide to base a log cabin on the island for exploring holidays. Determined walkers can take the Raad ny Foillan (Road of the Gull) - a 90 mile walking path which makes a complete circuit of the isle’s coast.
Popular attractions for static caravan tourists on the Isle of Man are 13th century Castle Rushen in Castletown, the iron age hill fort at Chapel Hill with its Viking ship burial site, Calf Island Cruises (to the Calf of Man, a small island and bird sanctuary) and beautiful Peel Castle on St Patrick's Island joined to Peel by a causeway.
The Isle of Man also has two unique animals – the four-horned Loghtan sheep and the tailless Manx cat. Static caravan owners with a taste for speed will be thrilled to learn that each year in May/June the island holds the ‘TT’ (Tourist Trophy) Races when 45,000 extra people arrive on the island to watch motorbikes tear round the island's public roads (the Mountain Circuit) at speeds of up to 200 miles per hour. Murray's Motorcycle Museum at Laxey on the coast is home to vintage motorbikes and TT memorabilia, for those mobile home holidaymakers wanting to learn more about the history of this event.
