Orkney Islands
Orkney, off the northern tip of Scotland where the North Sea and the Atlantic meet, is an archipelago of 70 or so islands and skerries, of which 17 are currently inhabited, with a few caravan parks to stay in, where mobile home holidaymakers can enjoy the pure air and heady scent of wildflowers, or the mysteries of the magnificent standing stones. The climate is temperate, warmed by the Gulf Stream. In the spring and summer months, the days are long and the skies are enormous, and in autumn, the northern lights offer a spectacular light show well worth seeing.Orkney's famous archaeology, superb wildlife, landscape, and traditional island welcome are well known. Static caravan and log cabin owners can visit the historic Viking's St Magnus Cathedral, dating back to around the twelfth century, one of Orkney's most magnificent landmarks, towering above the Kirkwall landscape with distinctive red sandstone hues. Mobile home holidaymakers fascinated by history and archaeology will be astounded by the Tomb of the Eagles. Pre-dating the pyramids, the tomb which contained the remains of 340 people, is estimated to be around 5000 years old.
